NHS Tayside welcomes Interim Chief Executive

NHS Tayside has appointed Professor Caroline Hiscox as Interim Chief Executive.

Professor Hiscox, who is currently Chief Executive at NHS Grampian, has over 30 years’ experience in corporate and public sector clinical and managerial roles. She will take up her role in December 2023 succeeding Professor Grant Archibald who announced his retiral in the summer following a 40-year career with the NHS in Scotland.

Professor Hiscox previously worked for NHS Tayside for three years as Associate Nurse Director before joining NHS Grampian in 2015.

Of her new role, Professor Hiscox said, “I am absolutely delighted to be returning to NHS Tayside to lead the next phase of the Board’s future development.

“The health and social care landscape has changed so much over the past few years and this presents many new opportunities to redesign how we deliver care and treatment for our patients and their families. I know NHS Tayside teams are performing well - and they have high ambitions to improve services even further. I am really looking forward to working with all staff across the organisation to lead that further transformation of services and explore new ways of improving staff and patient experience.”

Welcoming Professor Hiscox, NHS Tayside Chair Lorna Birse-Stewart said, “Caroline is a well-respected member of the NHS leadership in the north region and has earned a reputation for delivering patient-focused improvements.

“Tayside teams are delivering excellent care for their patients and our population. I am certain Caroline’s impressive track record in leadership will build on our teams’ endeavours and deliver even more person-centred care in our hospitals and in our communities. On behalf of the Board, we look forward to working with Caroline on this next chapter for NHS Tayside.”

    • Professor Hiscox joined NHS Grampian in April 2015. She was appointed as chief executive of NHS Grampian in October 2020 after serving as executive nurse director since April 2018 - a role in which she held executive responsibility for acute and tertiary services as well as professional leadership for over 7,000 nurses, midwives and allied health professionals.

Prior to joining NHS Grampian, Caroline was associate nurse director at NHS Tayside between 2012-2015. She was awarded a PhD in 2019 following extensive research into the behavioural aspects of professional accountability in the nursing workforce and holds an honorary Chair at the University of Aberdeen, the University of Stirling and is a Visiting Chair at Robert Gordon University.

Caroline was responsible for ground-breaking international recruitment work for NHS Grampian, which attracted 100 Australian based nurses to North East Scotland and led to an advisory role for NHS Scotland at the request of the Chief Nursing Officer.
