‘36 Stops’ photography exhibition in Tayport

The ‘36 Stops’ photograph exhibition by members of the ST/OP Online Photography Group has gone on display at a cafe in Tayport.

The collection of prints, produced as part of the ST/ART arts project, are on display until Saturday, 29 June in the Harbour Café in Tayport which is run by the Tayport Community Trust.

ST/ART is an arts project for stroke and acquired brain injury participants and others with long-term conditions, from across Tayside. It is supported by NHS Tayside and managed through Tayside Healthcare Arts Trust (THAT), in association with community partners, and contributes to participants’ health and wellbeing.

ST/OP is an online photography programme and participants with long-term health conditions and their carers meet monthly online to develop their knowledge and understanding of digital photography with lead artist and photographer David P Scott. With support from the ST/ART project, the relaxed monthly meetings give participants time to develop their ideas, discuss their work and experiences, experiment using phone cameras and free accessible apps, and set new challenges.

Each participant has three photographs in the exhibition, covering a wide range of subjects such as landscape, still life, street photography, travel, image construction and abstraction.

Twice a year, the group visit an interesting location or meet in person and discuss technical aspects of photography. This year they will visit Tayport to see their exhibition and take photographs in and around the village and the harbour.

Lead artist David Scott said, “The group have come an incredibly long way in such a short space of time. The photographs they produce are very creative and highly professional. Everyone has developed their own style and approach, and the exhibition is a great way of showcasing just how diverse that can be. Their imagination and storytelling comes through in the photographs and the sharing that takes place during the sessions makes the whole process such a positive experience for everyone involved.”

THAT project co-ordinator Chris Kelly said, “With participants from across Tayside, an online programme is the ideal way to support the group, especially those who can’t travel independently. It is great to see the prints on show and know that the public can see and appreciate the work and have the opportunity to purchase any of the prints on display. We’re very grateful to the Harbour Café and the Tayport Community Trust for hosting the exhibition.”

THAT was set up in 2002 and promotes creative engagement, using a variety of different art forms, as a means of improving the health and wellbeing of participants with a range of long-term conditions.
