Summer Schools Printmaking and Digital Photography Display at DCA
A marvellous display of printmaking and digital photography created by people from across Tayside, living with long-term health conditions, has launched at Dundee Contemporary Arts (DCA).
Participants enjoyed a celebratory event at the DCA on Thursday, 22 August and a collection of artworks created by participants of the ST/ART@DCA summer school programmes, part of Tayside Healthcare Arts Trust’s (THAT) annual partnership with DCA’s Learning Programme was showcased. Members of the public can visit this display of artworks until Monday, 26 August in DCA’s Create Space.
Participants living with a long-term condition, such as stroke, brain injury, multiple sclerosis, and chronic pain, attended four different summer school programmes in July and August.
This year’s summer schools featured screen printing, dry point, linocut printing and introduced a new digital photography and editing programme. These classes provided participants with exciting creative learning opportunities working with freelance tutors, DCA learning staff and THAT volunteers so participants could make sure they got the most out of the different programmes.
The ST/ART@DCA Display is open to the public Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 August from 11-6pm and Monday 26 August from 11-3pm.
THAT project coordinator Chris Kelly said, “I am delighted to say that our summer schools have been a big success again this year. It is a challenge to keep things fresh, but the introduction of new medium like digital photography, and the involvement of new participants, keeps us all on our toes and ensures we make every effort to provide a great summer school experience for all our participants.”
Scott Hudson, DCA learning coordinator said, “The ST/ART@DCA summer schools are always a highlight for us. It is a busy schedule for everyone but a great partnership with some familiar faces and new people joining us each year. It’s a great model and demonstrates the positive impacts of art making for participants wellbeing and their perceptions of their own abilities. Being able to host it at DCA also makes it special for them as well as us.”
The summer school has received great feedback from participants:
“Having a purpose for three days has been wonderful taking me out of my home. Euphoria! Joy! Love!”
“I did the opposite of going home crying! I feel elated after this three day stint. I’m a bit sad that it is over.”
“Keep going, it’s so life changing and life giving for us!”
“I really enjoyed learning and I have something to show at the end of it, a print of my own work. Thank you so much, infinite gratitude.”
“I really enjoyed this, it felt like I was going to work. I was proud of myself that I had enough energy to do the three days. I loved the opportunity to undertake art, it makes me so relaxed and focussed.”
ST/ART is an arts project primarily for stroke and acquired brain injury participants across Tayside, which is run by THAT in association with NHS Tayside.
