Dundee pupils design posters to promote smoke-free message
Pupils from Rowantree Primary School in Dundee took part in a poster design project to raise awareness of the impact of smoking and vaping.
Earlier this year, the pupils worked with NHS Tayside’s Early Years and Young People team to learn about how smoking and vaping can affect our health and the environment.
The whole school took part in the project and created lots of colourful and informative posters. Primary 1-3 pupils created posters to promote litter-free and smoke-free spaces in their community. Primary 4 and 5 pupils highlighted the health impacts of vaping and smoking, while Primary 6 and 7 pupils focused on the wider impact of smoking.
Winning posters were chosen and prizes were awarded at a school assembly in June. Each winner received a book provided by The National Literacy Trust along with further books for the school library.
The shortlisted and winning posters will be displayed at The Brooksbank Centre, which has worked closely with NHS Tayside’s Tobacco Control team to offer advice to people who would like to quit smoking or vaping.
Alison Duncan, senior health improvement officer/Early Years and Young People team lead, said, “This project has been led by the children at Rowantree Primary School and the wonderful artwork they have created will help to raise awareness of the impact of smoking and vaping within their community.
“Stopping smoking has many positive benefits – not only can it lead to improved physical health, but it will save you money too. Giving up smoking is the single most important lifestyle decision that someone can make to improve their health immediately.”
Research shows that people are much more likely to stop smoking for good if they use stop smoking support. NHS Tayside Quit Your Way services are available for anyone who wants to stop smoking in Tayside and include access to free medication and support that is right for you at your local community pharmacy.
NHS Tayside also offers an incentive scheme to those eligible who are trying to stop smoking. This scheme offers up to £50 a month in weekly vouchers to spend at a local supermarket. Visit your local community pharmacy for more information and to check if you are eligible for the incentive scheme.
