Montrose Stroke Club held an event this week in Montrose Bowling Club to celebrate the end of a visual arts and crafts programme.
Colourful gift bags, tags, cards, decorations and a variety of prints were created by members of Montrose Stroke Club as part of the ST/ART arts project.
ST/ART is an arts project for people who have had a stroke and acquired brain injury across Tayside.
The project is run by Tayside Healthcare Arts Trust (THAT), in association with NHS Tayside and community partners, and contributes to participants’ health and wellbeing.
These art and craft sessions are part of the larger creative engagement programmes for people with long-term conditions currently being delivered by THAT.
During the eight-session programme, participants experimented with different techniques like monoprinting and collage.
Lead artists Jude Gove and Suzie Scott supported participants throughout the programme, alongside volunteer artists Net McBride and Hetty Haxton.
Jude said, “Learning how to use printmaking and other techniques to make useable items like cards and bags is a great process. With the right level of support, participants can discover how effective even the simplest design can be. They enjoyed the making process and produced some wonderful work.”
Montrose Stroke Club coordinator Isabel Byers, said, “Working with the ST/ART Project is great because they plan the programme to suit everyone’s needs. A lot of our members look forward to these sessions and have really enjoyed themselves.”
THAT projects co-ordinator Chris Kelly said, “We’ve worked with the Montrose Stroke Club for many years and Jude and Suzie have worked with them before. They know what works and how to take the group through a successful and enjoyable programme. As the club continues to grow, there’s always new participants to engage with, as well as those we have worked with before. The feedback that we receive demonstrates that people take great personal satisfaction and benefit from this engagement.”
THAT was set up in 2002 and promotes creative engagement, using a variety of different art forms, as a means of improving the health and well being of participants with a range of long-term conditions.
