Three newly graduated mental health nurses, who have taken up their first professional posts with NHS Tayside, were recognised at the Abertay University 2024 Prizegiving Ceremony.

Hannah Summers, who works at the Dudhope Young People’s Unit, picked up two prizes on the night, the George McKenzie Memorial Prize and the NHS Tayside Charitable Foundation Prize. The George McKenzie Memorial Prize is presented to a final year student on the BSc (Hons) Mental Health Nursing programme who has achieved a high level of performance in Mental Health Nursing Practice. The NHS Tayside Charitable Foundation Prize is awarded to the mental health nursing student who achieves a high level of performance and is deemed to be the best student overall.

The Sarah Fletcher Memorial Prize for Compassionate Practice was awarded to Uche Ikoro, who is based in psychiatry of old age inpatient services at the Susan Carnegie Centre, Stracathro Hospital. This prize is awarded to a final year mental health nursing student who has shown exemplary practice of compassion.

Yazzmine Florence from Angus Integrated Drug and Alcohol Services won the Sheila Nimmo Prize for Professionalism in Nursing Practice. This accolade is presented to an undergraduate mental health nursing student who demonstrated exemplary professionalism in both university and while on clinical practice.

Nurse Director for Mental Health and Learning Disabilities Keith Russell said, “It was a great pleasure to meet Hannah, Yazzmine and Uche and to hear about their achievements in compassionate practice, professionalism, overall performance and academic excellence.

“I'm equally delighted that all three have chosen to start their mental health nursing careers in Tayside and am sure they, along with all our newly graduated practitioners, will make a significant contribution to the care and treatment of the patients we serve.”
