‘Within Me’ – A Musical Collaboration Celebrating Creativity and Connection
Tayside Healthcare Arts Trust (THAT) recently held a musical event in partnership with composer Matilda Brown and musicians from RSNO. The event at Ashton Hall, Caird Hall in Dundee, showcased original music created by participants with long-term health conditions.
Over eight sessions, participants worked with Brown and RSNO musicians to compose pieces around the theme, 'Within Me, there is safety from the storm!’. This theme symbolised finding inner strength during difficult times. The final event shared these personal and emotional pieces with family, friends, and guests.
This was the second programme under THAT and RSNO’s three-year partnership. It brought together a mix of returning and new participants, with experienced orchestra musicians offering support and inspiration.
With help from Leisure and Culture Dundee, the group met regularly at Ashton Hall, and the final session celebrated their creative journey. Chris Kelly, THAT Project Coordinator, helped guide the programme, ensuring everyone had a chance to contribute.
Composer Matilda Brown said, “It’s been wonderful working with the participants and RSNO musicians again. The mix of returning and new members brought fresh ideas and energy to the music.”
Chris Kelly added, “This programme boosts confidence and brings joy to participants. Working with professional musicians from the RSNO is an unforgettable experience that enriches their lives.”
The project, supported by NHS Tayside, is part of THAT’s ongoing effort to promote health and wellbeing through the arts for people living with long-term conditions.
The RSNO’s work with THAT in the 2024/25 season is supported by several charitable trusts, including Leisure & Culture Dundee, Northwood Charitable Trust, and the Leng Charitable Trust.
