Celebrating Creativity at PRI Stroke Unit

A vibrant celebration took place at the Stroke Rehabilitation Unit at Perth Royal Infirmary (PRI) to showcase an inspiring collection of artwork created by stroke inpatients as part of their rehabilitation journey.

The exhibition marked the culmination of a creative engagement programme delivered by Tayside Healthcare Arts Trust (THAT) in partnership with NHS Tayside. The initiative offered patients the opportunity to participate in twice weekly art sessions, supporting both their recovery and wellbeing through creative expression.

Led by experienced artist Alison Price and supported by volunteer Jenny Kelly, the programme focused on adapting to each patient’s individual abilities and interests. In addition, Saturday group sessions introduced a valuable social element, encouraging peer support and collaboration.

Alison said, “It’s great being back in the stroke unit. The staff really understand the value of the programme and support me to have time with the participants to develop their interests. With referrals from across the staff team it has been possible to work with a wide range of participants. We’ve had a wonderful time working together as they discover what they can achieve despite their stroke.”

Senior charge nurse, Lynne Bennett said, “It’s great having Ali here and being able to have all the benefits that this creative programme brings. We all value Ali’s work and appreciate the impact it has on patients.”

THAT project manager Iona McCann said, “Alison has been working with THAT for a number of years and has become a regular artist at the stroke unit. She brings experience and creative enthusiasm to the programme and the participants respond so positively to her input. She adapts her approach to each individual and encourages their development before bringing them together in the group sessions to collaborate and support each other. This combined approach has produced wonderful results.”
