NHS Tayside is making significant strides to reduce transport emissions whilst supporting Scotland’s journey to net zero.

Currently two-thirds of NHS Tayside’s vehicle fleet is electric or hybrid, with 60% fully electric vehicles (EVs) and 6% hybrids. This places NHS Tayside ahead of the Scottish average and demonstrates a strong commitment to sustainability.

The remaining fleet will continue to be phased out as part of an ambitious replacement programme and work will continue to meet the decarbonisation targets set by Scottish Government.

It’s Clean Air Day (19 June 2025) and transport is the main source of air pollution in Scotland. NHS Tayside’s Transport Team is actively working to ensure that all small vehicles under 3.5 tonnes are transitioned to EVs by the end of 2025 where operationally possible, in line with Scottish Government targets. So far this year, an additional 15 fossil fuel vehicles have been replaced with EVs.

NHS Tayside’s commitment to cleaner air extends beyond its vehicles by implementing a range of initiatives to reduce travel-related emissions:

    • Cycle to Work Scheme: Staff are encouraged to take advantage of the Cycle to Work Scheme, which offers tax-efficient bike purchases.

    • Wee Walk Works Wonders: NHS Tayside supports the Wee Walk Works Wonders campaign, encouraging staff and the public to incorporate short walks into their daily routines.

    • Go NHS Tayside Journey Planner: This tool, available at www.gonhstayside.co.uk, is promoted on all patient appointment letters to encourage sustainable travel planning.

NHS Tayside Consultant in Public Health Medicine Dr Emily Stevenson said, “NHS Tayside is proud to be playing its part by transforming its fleet and supporting active travel.

“As Scotland moves towards its net zero target, NHS Tayside remains committed to leading by example and creating a healthier, more sustainable future for all.”
