NHS Tayside Surpasses Waste Reduction Targets
NHS Tayside is reducing food waste and improving recycling across its sites, exceeding several key Scottish Government waste reduction targets.
NHS Tayside has reduced its general waste by an impressive 56%, surpassing the national target of 15%. No general waste is sent to landfill, helping protect the environment for future generations. The dedication of the catering team has seen food waste cut by 47%, exceeding the national target of 33%.
To support further improvement, NHS Tayside is committed to ensuring that 70% of domestic waste is recycled or composted by 2025. Communal waste stations have been introduced in non-clinical areas. These stations encourage better waste segregation and recycling, and many teams have removed personal waste bins to support the initiative.
Recycling bins are in place across NHS Tayside to help staff, patients and visitors to make the right choice at the point of disposal.
The introduction of Green Champions has helped promote sustainability in many departments, these champions are from many different areas and services across NHS Tayside. They are helping to embed good environmental practices into everyday work and deliver the ambition of reaching net zero.
NHS Tayside Chief Executive Nicky Connor said, “I am incredibly proud of the progress NHS Tayside has made in reducing waste and protecting our environment. These achievements reflect the dedication of our staff and our commitment to sustainability. We know there is more to do, and we will continue to support our teams with the tools and information they need to make a difference. Together, we are building a greener future for Tayside.”
