Student accommodation at Perth Royal Infirmary has recently undergone essential refurbishment work to improve the environment for medical students.

The accommodation will provide students with the opportunity to stay locally to both hospital and community placements within the Perth and Kinross area.  In total 15 single accommodation rooms, living spaces, kitchen and laundry facilities have been fully refurbished.

The refurbishment work includes new furniture, bathroom suites, kitchens, redecoration and new boilers.

This work was completed thanks to NHS Tayside ACT (Additional Cost of Teaching) and Soft Facilities funding and delivered in collaboration with the University of Dundee School of Medicine, Directorate of Medical Education and NHS Tayside’s Soft Facilities and Property Departments.

Eve Laws, Medical Illustrator at the School of Medicine, has also produced several pieces of artwork for the accommodation which represent the body systems and the history of the Perth Royal Infirmary site, enhancing the space for all its users.

The refurbished accommodation was officially opened by Professor Rory McCrimmon, Dean of the University of Dundee’s School of Medicine.

Dr Claire Stubbings, NHS Tayside Associate Director of Medical Education, said, “This significant, long-term investment in student accommodation at Perth Royal Infirmary marks a major step forward in enhancing the experience of medical students on placement here. The upgraded facilities offer a more modern living environment that supports student wellbeing and fosters a stronger sense of community on site.

“We hope these improvements will encourage students to stay at PRI during their placements, helping them feel more connected to the hospital and the wider healthcare team. This development has been several years in the making, and we’re proud to now offer accommodation that reflects the high standards of medical education delivered at PRI."

Professor Rory McCrimmon said, “It is great to see these refurbished facilities open to our medical students in Perth. Having high-quality, modern accommodation close to both hospital and community placements makes an enormous difference to their learning experience and wellbeing. This investment will help us continue to attract students to train in Perth, strengthening vital links between the University, NHS Tayside and the local community.”

Lesley Gallagher, NHS Tayside Site and Soft Facilities Manager at Perth Royal Infirmary, said, “We’re really proud of the transformation of the student accommodation at PRI. The refurbishment has created a more modern, comfortable and welcoming environment that better supports students and enhances their overall experience while on placement.”
