Ninewells Community Garden set to bloom with ‘Catherine’s Roses’
Patients, staff and visitors to Ninewells can now enjoy a new addition to the hospital’s community garden following the planting of a special donation of ‘Catherine’s Roses’ from Kensington Palace.
Last year Catherine, Princess of Wales was invited by the Royal Horticultural Society to have a charity rose named in her honour, known as ‘Catherine’s Rose’.
As part of this initiative, 500 ‘Catherine’s Rose’ plants are being donated to wellbeing gardens and green spaces across the UK. Ninewells Community Garden was delighted to receive its roses last week, with the planting carried out by NHS Tayside Chair Carole Wilkinson and Chief Executive Nicky Connor.
Some of the garden’s regular volunteers were also in attendance to see the planting of the new roses, which aim to bring beauty, comfort and a reminder of the healing power of nature to those experiencing poor health.
Chair Carole Wilkinson said, “It was a beautiful day in the community garden and a privilege to receive and plant the ‘Catherine’s Rose’. Time spent in the garden is always a pleasure and I hope that the roses bring comfort and enjoyment to patients, staff and visitors alike.”
Chief Executive Nicky Connor added, “The community garden at Ninewells is such a wonderful space cared for so well by trustees and volunteers and I loved being part of the planting ceremony with them. I look forward to seeing the roses grow and bloom.”
‘Catherine’s Rose’ celebrates the healing power of nature and raises awareness of the important role that spending time outdoors plays in bringing joy and supporting mental and physical wellbeing. Proceeds from the sale of this rose support The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity, helping to fund specialist care for cancer patients with specific needs.
The addition of the roses further enhances Ninewells Community Garden as a peaceful space supporting wellbeing, recovery and community connection.
