NHS Tayside powers ahead on Net Zero journey with new solar installation
NHS Tayside has taken another major step towards its commitment to reach Net Zero by 2040 with the installation of solar photovoltaic (PV) panels at the MacKenzie building on the Ninewells site.
The new solar panels will generate clean, renewable electricity on-site, reducing NHS Tayside’s carbon footprint by 15.2 tonnes of CO₂ every year, which equates to 10 return flights from London to New York or the equivalent of 25 households' typical annual electricity consumption.
By producing our own green energy, we are helping to protect against energy price increases and contributing to Scotland’s wider efforts to tackle climate change. When generation exceeds demand, surplus electricity is exported to the National Grid, meaning NHS Tayside is playing its part in reducing emissions across the country.
This project is a key milestone in delivering the NHS Tayside Net Zero Route Map, published in 2023, which sets out how it will decarbonise our estate. Solar PV installations are a major component of this plan, and this project joins recent installations at Westgate Health Centre and Abbey Health Centre in Arbroath.
The project was delivered in partnership with Vital Energi through the CEF Energy contract on the Ninewells campus and funded by the Central Energy Efficiency Fund (CEEF) – a Scottish Government initiative established in 2005 to support energy-saving measures in public bodies.
NHS Tayside Associate Director of Facilities - Property Mark Anderson said, “This solar installation is a fantastic example of the dedication and expertise of the teams across NHS Tayside and our partners. Their hard work is turning our Net Zero ambitions into reality, delivering projects that make a tangible difference for our patients, staff, and the environment. Every milestone like this reflects the commitment and collaboration that is driving a more sustainable future for healthcare in Tayside."
NHS Tayside Head of New Works David Gibson said, “This project really showcases the incredible commitment and skill of the staff in the new works and the energy teams. They rose to every challenge and delivered a high-quality outcome that exceeded expectations. Their careful coordination ensured the work was completed seamlessly, with minimal disruption to services in the MacKenzie building.”
