Early pregnancy loss facility opens at Ninewells Hospital
The Meadow Suite is a newly refurbished addition to NHS Tayside’s gynaecology services created to provide dedicated care for women and their families experiencing early pregnancy loss.
Designed with privacy and comfort at its heart, the suite offers a separate entrance and waiting area, helping to create a calm and supportive environment.
There is also a newly designed route into the unit, which is signposted with a cornflower motif, reducing the likelihood of patients encountering pregnant women or newborn babies during their visit.
The Meadow Suite includes a dedicated triage room where assessments and some treatments can be carried out in a quiet setting. There are two private recovery rooms for women receiving medical or surgical treatment. Each room includes a day bed, allowing partners or loved ones to remain close and provide support throughout care and recovery.
The name Meadow Suite was chosen by staff and third sector colleagues as flowers and green space are associated with supporting wellbeing. To reflect this, a large wall mural depicting a meadow scene is on display with the unit.
Denise Marshall, senior nurse, Gynaecological and Early Pregnancy Services, said, “Sadly, early pregnancy loss affects many women and families, and we know how important it is that care is delivered in the right environment. The Meadow Suite has been designed to provide privacy, comfort and compassionate support at what can be an incredibly difficult time.
“Every aspect of the suite helps ensure women and their loved ones feel cared for, supported and treated with sensitivity throughout their journey.”
As part of the care offered, families are invited to add a flower memento to the meadow wall art to create a floral landscape. Families can choose to mark either the month of their loss or the month their baby was due to be born.
A variety of flower designs printed on melamine are available which can be taken home as a lasting keepsake alongside other memory items that are provided by the team.
This new space represents NHS Tayside’s commitment to delivering more personalised and sensitive care for women and families experiencing early pregnancy loss.
