New bike hub unveiled at Ninewells Hospital to boost active travel

Pedal power gets a boost at Ninewells Hospital with the official opening of a new bike shelter hub for staff.

The cycle parking shelter, which is located near the Emergency Department, provides 98 spaces for staff, supporting NHS Tayside’s commitment to encourage active and sustainable travel.

Funding to build the new facilities was provided by Tactran and NHS Tayside Charitable Foundation after staff feedback identified that more cycle options on site would help encourage people to cycle to work more often.

The new hub, which will be accessed via a secure key-lock system by staff, is in addition to 265 bike shelter spaces already available to staff at locations across the Ninewells site. A bike maintenance stand is also provided on the pathway to the main entrance of Ninewells.

Ashleigh Henderson, Senior Health Improvement Officer and lead for Physical Activity in NHS Tayside’s Directorate of Public Health said, “We are thrilled to officially open the new bike shelter hub for staff. NHS Tayside is committed to supporting active and sustainable travel and this new facility is a fantastic addition to the existing cycling facilities available for staff. Thank you to Tactran and NHS Tayside Charitable Foundation for making this project a reality and supporting us towards our climate and sustainability ambitions.

“Giving staff a safe, convenient place to park their bikes helps make active travel an easier choice, supports wellbeing, and keeps us moving toward our sustainability goals to support greener travel.”

Dr Lesley Crichton, Consultant Anaesthetist, regularly cycles to the hospital and has worked with NHS Tayside’s Transport and Travel team to collect staff feedback on cycling facility requirements.

She said, “Cycling, walking and wheeling to work is good for health, finances and the environment, not to mention avoiding the search for a parking space. It is important that NHS Tayside helps to create the conditions for people to choose to leave their car at home, and the installation of these fantastic shelters is big step towards that.”

Brian Jones, Trustee from NHS Tayside Charitable Foundation and NHS Tayside non-executive sustainability champion, said “The NHS Tayside Charitable Foundation is pleased to support the new bike shelter. These new cycle parking facilities at Ninewells reflect a wider commitment to greener healthcare, healthier communities and a more sustainable NHS for future generations.”

Neil Quinney, Transport Officer from Tactran said, “Tactran are delighted to support this new cycle parking facility at Ninewells Hospital through People & Place funding from Transport Scotland. This facility will support everyday active travel journeys to Ninewells by staff by providing easily accessible, spacious and secure cycle parking facilities onsite.”
