“She said yes”- Love triumphs at Ninewells after life-changing accident

After 10 months in intensive care at Ninewells Hospital, Dominic Roberts-Brown, from Broughty Ferry surprised partner Jennifer with a heartfelt proposal surrounded by family and friends in the hospital's Chaplaincy Centre.

The proposal marked a joyful milestone for the couple, whose lives changed dramatically following a serious road traffic accident on Dominic's journey to work last year. Despite the challenges they have faced, the couple say the experience has only strengthened their relationship and confirmed what they already knew, that they wanted to spend the rest of their lives together.

Dominic, who has spent the last 10 months receiving care in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Ninewells Hospital, proposed to Jennifer during a surprise gathering surrounded by family and friends.

The couple first met on a night out at the Queen Anne pub in Lochee and have built a strong relationship over the past two years. While marriage had always been part of their plans, Dominic said the accident gave him a renewed sense of perspective and strengthened his determination to make his commitment official.

With the help of staff, family and friends, the surprise proposal was carefully arranged. While Jennifer enjoyed lunch with her mother, Dominic waited nervously in the hospital's Chaplaincy Centre alongside their loved ones.

When Jennifer arrived, she was met with the surprise proposal and immediately said yes.

The couple then celebrated the special moment with cake and a toast with those closest to them.

Reflecting on the proposal, Dominic said, "I was nervous and a bit overwhelmed, but the last few months have reminded me what's really important. I'd always wanted to ask Jennifer to marry me, and with everything we've been through has only made me more certain. She's been there for me every step of the way and I'm delighted she said yes."

Jennifer Devlin, Dominic’s Fiancée said, “I was so surprised. It seemed unusual when my mum wanted us to stop by the Chaplaincy on the way to see Dom, but I had no idea what was about to happen. Our relationship has moved quickly, but we've known from the start that we wanted to be together. I'm so happy and excited for our future together.”

Although Dominic remains in hospital and continues to require specialist care and ventilatory support, the couple are looking forward to their future together and have already set a wedding date for 30 September 2028.

The date holds special significance, as it marks the wedding anniversary of Jennifer's grandparents.

Hilton Moore, Staff Nurse in Critical Care, said, "The pathways to reaching this moment have indeed been a remarkable journey of dedication, patience and most importantly love. Dominic's support system, family, loved ones and staff all are witnesses to this. It is wonderful as staff to be able to support Dominic on this big milestone."

The couple are now looking ahead to planning their wedding while continuing their journey together.
