NHS Tayside Apprentices and Adult Trainees Helping Build the Future Workforce

Apprentices and adult trainees across NHS Tayside are gaining valuable skills and experience while supporting essential maintenance and engineering services that help keep hospitals and healthcare facilities running safely and effectively.

The Estates Career Pathways & Lifelong Learning Programme provides opportunities for people at different stages of their careers to gain practical experience alongside experienced professionals, helping to develop the skilled workforce needed to support NHS services now and in the future.

Working across a range of disciplines including plumbing, joinery, electrical and mechanical engineering, apprentices and trainees combine hands-on learning with formal training and qualifications, building rewarding careers while contributing to the delivery of quality healthcare facilities.

The programme currently includes apprentice plumber Jude Fyfe, apprentice joiner Finlay Robertson, apprentice electrician Leon Shepherd, adult trainee mechanical fitter Kevin Barrie, and adult trainee electricians Alister Gordon and Andrew McOuat.

Supported by Maintenance Managers David Malcolm and Gary Monks, alongside Judith Golden, Employability and Apprenticeship Lead, and Melanie Watt, Recruitment Services Advisor, participants are gaining experience across a variety of NHS Tayside environments while developing the skills required for long-term careers within the organisation.

Garry Johnstone, Head of Estates, said, “I am delighted to welcome the latest cohort of apprentices and adult trainees into NHS Tayside Estates Division. This is the latest phase of our ongoing commitment to create career pathways for all and further enhances our objective of ensuring we utilise the unique and complex engineering and building systems within the Healthcare Built Environment as a lifelong learning environment for all our staff."

Judith Golden, Employability and Apprenticeship Lead, said, “This has been a fantastic achievement the balance of young apprentices and investing in current staff exemplifies our commitment to our communities and existing staff.”

The programme reflects NHS Tayside's commitment to developing local talent and creating opportunities for people to build successful careers in the skilled trades, helping to support the safe and effective operation of healthcare facilities across Tayside.
