Taking steps to improve parking at Ninewells Hospital
Work to improve parking arrangements at Ninewells Hospital is moving up a gear as NHS Tayside drives forward plans to deliver a better experience for patients, visitors and staff.
A review of car parking across the site looked at traffic management, enforcement, parking allocation, accessibility and sustainable travel. The review group, which included a wide range of stakeholders such as patients, staff, local councillors and bus companies, identified a need to modernise parking management, improve enforcement and ensure parking arrangements better support patients, visitors and staff.
A proposal to undertake a programme of improvements was recently presented to Tayside NHS Board and will take place in two phases.
Phase 1 will focus on the procurement of a new car parking management and enforcement contract for Ninewells and Perth Royal Infirmary, including investment in Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology.
The second phase will deliver targeted changes to improve the flow of traffic and better align parking spaces with the needs of patients, visitors and staff. These improvements were considered and approved by the review group following extensive consultation with a wide range of stakeholders, and include changes to drop-off and setting-down arrangements, the reallocation of some parking spaces, and increasing accessible parking availability, such as for Blue Badge holders.
NHS Tayside will continue to monitor and formally review the changes to assess their impact and inform any further improvements.
Director of Infrastructure Rose Jenkins said, “Car parking at Ninewells continues to be a challenging issue which impacts on patients, visitors and staff and I’m pleased that we’ve made positive progress in identifying where changes are needed. Improved traffic flow, clearer controls and better allocation of spaces will help improve the overall experience for patients, visitors and staff coming on to the Ninewells site.”
