Up and About (falls prevention)

There are many different ways to access the Up and About classes:

• Self Referral - if you have had a fall, or are concerned about falling, you can refer yourself to the Tayside Falls Service.  The Falls Service Team will be able to give you information about what classes are on in your area and whether you are likely to benefit from attending the class.
• GP - your GP can refer you to the Falls Service (speak to your GP for more information).
• A&E - the staff at A&E can refer you to the Falls Service if you have attended A&E after a fall.
• Physiotherapist - if you are receiving physiotherapy at home or have a home exercise programme having spent time in hospital, your physiotherapist can refer you to the Falls Service (ask your physiotherapist for more information).

If you have been referred to the Up and About classes you will be contacted by the physiotherapy team to arrange a time to carry out a pre-class assessment of your balance and mobility.  The team will then work with you to help prevent the potential of future falls, or help you to regain your confidence after a fall.

The programme runs over 7 weeks with classes either once or twice a week depending on your level of ability.  You will also receive a home exercise programme to do outside of class times that you can then continue with at the end of the class schedule.
