ITB Friction Syndrome

  • Friction from the Iliotibial Band over the lateral epicondyle of the distal femur is a source of localised lateral knee pain, particularly in distance runners.
  • Activity modification and physiotherapy with stretches and correction of any muscle imbalances are the mainstay of treatment. Type of footwear and pronated feet have also been implicated and a podiatry or orthotics referral via SCI Gateway may also be appropriate.

Who to Refer

Refer to physiotherapy if not settling with conservative management.

Who not to Refer

  • There are no proven effective operations for ITB friction syndrome and therefore we do not offer surgical consultation for this condition.
