Dental & Therapy Student Clinics

Undergraduate Student Clinics

Undergraduate Dental and Therapy students carry out clinical work within the Dental Hospital under the supervision of qualified Hygienists, Therapists and Dentists. Free dental treatment is provided to allow our undergraduate clinical students to gain the necessary experience of routine dentistry in adults and children. Recruitment of patients for these clinics varies according to the academic term, training needs and waiting time directives.

We accept direct referrals for student treatment to the Paediatric department (for patients aged 16 and under) and to the Restorative department (for patients aged 17 and over). Direct referrals specifically for non-surgical periodontal care are accepted onto both undergraduate Dental and Therapy student clinics. Not all patients are suitable for treatment by students. Therefore, the first appointment is likely to be on a Screening Clinic to allow a qualified member of staff to examine the patient and answer any questions the patient may have about student treatment and appropriately assign their case to a student able to provide the requisite care.

Direct referrals to Oral Surgery student clinic are not possible. However, simple Oral Surgery cases (such as straightforward exodontia and removal of retained roots) are commonly assessed on the student clinic following vetting of the referral by a clinician.

Postgraduate Dental Student Clinics

There are currently postgraduate students based within the Restorative Department whilst studying towards a Masters in Endodontics or Fixed and Removable Prosthodontics. Suitable patient cases are sought through the Specialist Pathway in Restorative Dentistry.
Please note if considering referral to the postgraduate students:
• Recruitment to these clinics depends on a number of factors including: Case complexity, academic term time, training needs and waiting time directives.
• Please follow referral guidance found under ‘Referring to Dundee Dental Hospital Specialist Services: Restorative Dentistry’

Patient Journey

The Initial Appointment
Patients who have been referred by a clinician or have self-referred may first be ‘screened’ at a short appointment by a member of staff or assessed and treatment planned on a Consultant Clinic. This allows a qualified dentist to examine the patient, answer questions the patient may have about student treatment and appropriately assign their case to a student able to provide the requisite care.

Failure to attend
If a patient fails to attend for an appointment on the student clinic or repeatedly cancels appointments at short notice, discharge is likely.
