Healthcare Chaplains

Why might I want to see a Chaplain?
People experience coming into hospital in different ways. Sometimes, hospitals can trigger a spiritual need such as:

  • end of life care and bereavement
  • fear of surgery, therapy or medical procedures
  • following bad news, difficult decisions or diagnosis
  • when affected by a traumatic incident (such as an accident or assault)

What do Chaplains do?

Chaplains provide a safe place where patients, family and staff members can be themselves and express their hopes and fears in confidence and free from judgement. We offer support to people of all backgrounds, with or without a specific faith or belief.

We provide:
  • A listening ear and emotional support, allowing you to reflect on your experience, ways of coping, beliefs and concerns.
  • A means to express loss, fear, anger, sorrow and celebration.
  • Advice or access to spiritual and religious care matters within NHS Tayside.

How can I see a Chaplain?

The Chaplains visit wards regularly. If you would like a visit please ask a member of staff to make contact on your behalf or you could do this yourself by phoning 01382 632 755. We work office hours Monday-Friday, however, there is an on-call Chaplain available for urgent referrals which can be accessed via switchboard on 01382 660 111.  If you would like your own belief group leader to visit you in hospital, the Chaplains will be very happy to help arrange this for you.

Spiritual Care Resources

Some of the hospitals across NHS Tayside have a multi-faith sanctuary or quiet room to provide an area of rest, prayer or quiet contemplation and peacefulness in the midst of a busy hospital. Sacred texts and devotional literature can be made available on request. These areas are open all day, every day.
  • Ninewells - In the Spiritual Care dept on level 7
  • Perth Royal Infirmary
  • Stracathro Hospital - In the Susan Carnegie Building opposite reception
  • Roxburgh House - At the end of the west wing

Spiritual Care Policy

Chaplains are professionally trained and work within the NHS Tayside Spiritual Care policy to ensure that the spiritual and religious care needs of patients and those who are important to them are supported. Contact the Wellbeing Centre for more information on 01382 423 110.
