Three community nursing staff from NHS Tayside have been recognised by the Queen’s Nursing Institute Scotland (QNIS).

A midwife and two nurses from Tayside were among a group of 24 extraordinary community nurses and midwives from across Scotland to have been awarded the prestigious title of Queen’s Nurse.

All three were nominated by NHS Tayside for their clinical expertise and compassionate care and successfully completed a nine-month development programme which consisted of residential workshops, online workshops and individual coaching sessions.

Claire Pearse, a midwife at NHS Tayside, Helen Bremner, a Clinical Team Manager at NHS Tayside and Angus Health and Social Care Partnership and Jill Wright, a Service Manager for drug and alcohol recovery service at NHS Tayside were awarded the Queen’s Nurse title at a ceremony staged at the Sheraton Grand Hotel in Edinburgh.

Simon Dunn, Nurse Director of Corporate Nursing at NHS Tayside said, “I am delighted that Claire, Helen and Jill have been recognised for their commitment and dedication to nursing. It really is a fantastic achievement to be among only 24 extraordinary nurses selected for the prestigious Queen’s Nurse programme across Scotland, and I’m sure that this experience will be of great benefit to all three of them and to their patients.”

Notes to Editors:

Queen’s Nursing in Scotland dates back to the late 19th century, when nurses completed specific training which allowed them to work as district nurses. They provided healthcare and health promotion to people in their own homes and became well respected figures within their community.

Following the introduction of a national certificate for district nursing, QNIS ceased training, awarding the original QN District Nursing title for the final time in 1969. The Queen’s Nurse title was reintroduced to Scotland in 2017, with 20 community nurses chosen to take part in a transformational development programme which would see them become the first modern Queen’s Nurses. There are now over 150 contemporary Queen’s Nurses working across Scotland.
