A display of artworks created by stroke patients as part of their rehabilitation was launched at Perth Royal Infirmary today (Wednesday).

The artworks were created as part of the annual ST/ART programme, a creative engagement project for stroke participants which is delivered across Tayside. The project is run by Tayside Healthcare Arts Trust (THAT) in association with NHS Tayside.

The programme was delivered by lead artist Alison Price and volunteer artist Ruth Dowell and provided patients in the stroke rehabilitation unit with two sessions a week over 12 weeks.

Alison led one-to-one sessions with participants, creatively tailoring each process to suit their abilities and interests. She also ran group sessions with Ruth, providing a social element to the programme that helped the participants get to know each other and build peer support through working together.

The focus of the work this year has been on drawing and painting and a selection of the work produced by the group is on display in the unit until Tuesday 13 February for staff and visitors to enjoy and appreciate.

Patients, staff and visitors joined in the celebration today and were given the opportunity to collaborate on a multi-canvas painting as part of the event.

Acting senior charge nurse Lynne Bennett said, “We all really appreciate the impact that the ST/ART programme can have on our patients. With the help of the artists, they have produced fantastic work.”

Alison said, “I love being back in the stroke unit. The staff always treat me as part of the rehab team and they understand the value of the programme and support me to have time with the participants to develop their interests. We’ve had a wonderful time working together with a wide range of participants as they discover what they can achieve despite their stroke.”
