Diagnostic Radiography (Diagnostic Imaging within Clinical Radiology)

Diagnostic Radiographers provide a range of speciality imaging examinations that facilitate an effective planning and treatment regime to be undertaken by referrers. Examinations such as CT and MRI are also carried out to assess ongoing treatment regimes such as chemotherapy.

Referral to the Service

People are referred for clinical radiology examinations by doctors or other health care professionals. Referrals are made only after significant risk versus benefit dose decisions are made, as general radiography and CT require differing radiation doses.

If you feel that you need an examination you should discuss with your GP or local clinician.

The Assessment

Radiographers will assess if you are fit for the examination and will question you closely regarding any allergy history, as many examinations in CT and MRI require a contrast agent to be administered. Patients attending MRI will be questioned about previous surgery where there may have been implanted surgical clips.
