Flash glucose scanning

Flash glucose scanning (FGS) is a new and evolving technology in the management of type 1 diabetes.  There is only one FGS device that is readily available in the UK - the FreeStyle Libre.  This page provides resources to support getting established on FGS, as well as advice for schools.

The following video describes what FGS is, how it works, how to set it up and how to view and share your data.  We have additional videos on how to interpret the data and make changes which are available on our FGS guidelines page.

Accessing and sharing FGS data

There are a number of ways to store and review your FGS data, including:
  • FreeStyle Libre reader - this is the device that is provided with the initial package
  • FreeStyle LibreLink app - downloaded onto your smart phone and used to scan the sensor
  • FreeStyle LibreLinkUp app - for parents/carers to receive child's FGS readings
  • Freestyle LibreView - downloaded onto your home computer and used to view data obtained from the reader or your phone (via LibreLink)

Data can be shared with the DOT Tayside team in the following ways:
If using smartphone as primary device: go to “menu”, then “connected Apps”, then “LibreView”, then “connect to a practice”. Enter the practice code 09466409?
If using the handset and LibreView on a computer: go to the top right corner “settings menu”, then “account settings”, then “my practices” and enter the same practice code (09466409).
Both of these approaches are described in detail in the video above, with relevant screenshots to talk you through it.

If you would like to view your FGS data alongside your other devices (e.g. blood glucose meter, insulin pump), then we recommend uploading all devices to Tidepool.  Unfortunately, this is no longer possible since the release of Libre 2.  Please contact the team at Abbott if this is a feature that you would find valuable and would like to be switched on again.

Further information on interpretation of glucose values and directional arrows is available on our FGS guidelines page.
