Common after effects

1. Feeling Sick or Vomiting

Up to a third of patients may feel sick after their surgery.

You may be given anti-sickness medication during your anaesthetic but you can ask for more afterwards if you need it.

Please let your anaesthetist know if you have felt or been sick after a previous anaesthetic.

2. Sore Throat

If you have a general anaesthetic, a soft tube will be placed in your throat to help you breathe.  In up to a quarter of patients, this can cause a slightly sore throat.

If this happens, the symptoms will usually disappear within a few hours.

3. Damage to teeth, lips and tongue

The breathing tube may occasionally cause minor damage to your lips or tongue.

Minor cuts or bruising to the lips or tongue usually heal very quickly. Less commonly, teeth or dental work may be broken, chipped, loosened or accidently removed.

Your anaesthetist will ask about any dental work you have, or any loose teeth, to reduce the risk of this happening. We always take great care not to cause any damage.
