About us

The Palliative Care Service in Ninewells Hospital is provided by a small team of Consultants and Specialist Nurses.  As well as providing advice and support to patients throughout the hospital we also have three Specialist Palliative Care beds in Ward 27.

Where are we based?

Our offices are based on level 7 South Block, Ninewells Hospital.

Aims of the service

If you are having problems with complicated symptoms such as pain or sickness which are part of your illness the team will work with your doctors to give you extra support and specialist advice about how to effectively treat these problems.

We aim to help you cope with your situation in the best way for you and we can help talk through any worries that you or your family might have whilst you are in hospital.  If you wish we can arrange to see your family during visiting times or at a more convenient time.  We can also help to discuss and plan your discharge home or to another place, such as a local hospice, or community hospital.

If your symptoms are complex you may be transferred to the Acute Palliative Care Unit in Ward 27 for a short period of time.  Here you will receive intensive input by a specialist medical and nursing team to help improve your situation.

If your illness is serious and you are unable to go home, we will work closely with the doctors and nurses on your ward to help give you expert care at the end of your life.
