Wheelchair and Seating Service

The NHS Tayside Wheelchair and Seating Service aims to meet the mobility and associated seating needs of wheelchair users primarily in Tayside, Scotland.

Services Provided

The service is clinically-based with particular emphasis on carefully assessing patients' needs and then prescribing an appropriate device. This is done in collaboration with associated carers and professional staff.

All patients are reviewed at least annually by post after last contact with the service.

Devices

Devices are provided based on clinical need in line with nationally agreed criteria. They are restricted to people with a permanent disability which limits their ability to walk. Devices are provided on loan and must be returned to the service when no longer needed.

The range of devices available from the service includes the following:

  • Manual Wheelchairs, Children's Buggies - attendant propelled, occupant propelled.
  • Powered Wheelchairs - indoor only, indoor/outdoors. Special control systems can be included.
  • Special Seating - pressure management, postural control. Seating is provided primarily for use within wheelchair systems issued by the service.

Customised devices can be designed and manufactured for individuals' needs. These devices range from simple modifications to wheelchairs to entire purpose-built seating systems.

Support Services

All devices issued by the service are repaired, delivered and collected by its Technical Support service. Wherever practical, repairs are carried out at peoples' homes. When wheelchairs are returned, they are refurbished and placed back in stock for issue to subsequent patients.

The service is committed to providing teaching to a wide variety of professional staff and carers involved in the provision and use of wheelchairs and seating.
