Children's Investigation Unit (CIU)

The Children’s Investigation Unit is based within the Children’s Hospital at Ninewells on level 4 of the hospital.

This unit is open daily Monday to Friday 8.30am to 4.30pm caring for children of all ages who are having treatments or investigations carried out but do not need to stay in hospital overnight.

One parents or carer is encouraged to stay within the unit with your child for the duration of their appointment.

What we do

The CIU performs investigations and carries out treatment for children and young people that can be delivered in a day. This means you get to go home the same day as your visit.

If you need to attend regularly for treatment the nursing team will book your next appointment before you leave, allowing you to make preparations for your next visit.

What to expect when visiting CIU

We provide comfortable reclining chairs or a hospital bed for children receiving treatment. Play facilities will be provided at the bedside by our play specialist team.

Children who are attending for a quick investigation such as a blood test will be asked to sit in a waiting room, which has toys available and then taken into a treatment room for the test to be carried out.

The experienced nursing team will offer support and preparation for children having tests done. An open and honest approach to performing a procedure for children is used and works very well. Children will receive a small gift for being brave, this is from the local charity called The Sunshine Box.

The safety of children is paramount. The door to the CIU is always closed and locked and a secure entry system is in place. Access can be obtained using the intercom system outside the door.
