The children’s out-patient clinic is based within the children’s hospital at Ninewells on level 4 of the hospital. There is a separate entrance located at the Children’s Hospital Entrance from the road James Arrnott Drive.

The children’s outpatient department offers a wide range of clinics for children up to the age of 16 years old or until transitioned to adult services. Your child may attend a general paediatric clinic or one for a specific condition such as diabetes, epilepsy or asthma. Children may also be reviewed in clinic by surgeons who specialise in young people.

Children are seen at the out-patient clinic if your GP / Health Visitor or another specialist refers them.
CTH Recovery Reception Booth

What to expect at the Outpatient Department

You will be welcomed to the area by a health care worker / nurse, you will also meet the receptionist who will confirm that we have your child’s correct details.

The nursing team will ask to do your child’s weight & height and possibly other tests before you see the doctor (these are important to help the Doctor know if your child is growing as they should be). If your child is a baby please bring your “Red Book”.

You will be invited into the clinic room from the waiting area by the doctor. They will ask you about your child and discuss the reason your child has been referred. They may also examine your child. After your discussions with the doctor some other tests may be required. eg. blood test, urine test, blood pressure. Some of these may be done before you leave the clinic and others may be arranged for a later date. If required, the nursing team in the clinic are highly skilled at performing blood tests and will help support your child through the procedure.

The Doctor may ask for other tests to be arranged by other departments such as X-rays, MRIs, hearing test, eye test etc. You will receive an appointment time for these in the post.

If a further appointment with the doctor is required an appointment will be sent to you by post.

The Doctor will share the information from the clinic appointment with your GP and other health professionals involved in your child's care.
