Play Service

Play is a vital part of the child’s hospital journey, providing that little bit of normality in an abnormal situation, helping children cope with their hospital admission.

We aim to ensure that all children attending hospital have full opportunity for play and recreation in an environment designed, furnished and staffed to meet each child’s individual needs.

The play service runs 7 days a week, ensuring consistency for all children and young people.

Play Specialists

Play Specialists are there to help support children who may be experiencing difficulties during their hospital admission. Through tailored play programmes we aim to reduce fears and misconceptions, and will support children during procedures helping them cope.

Play specialists also offer a referral service where children who are experiencing severe anxieties around certain procedures, can be referred to the service. Play Specialists will work with the child using play therapy. Helping the child to cope with whatever procedure they require, accompanying the child during the procedure supporting, using distraction therapy.
CTH Play Specialist

Play Centre

The Play Service is based in a purpose built play centre catering for all ages up to 16 years old. Children who are able can come along to the centre, which is run by Play specialists and Play assistants. For those children unable to attend the Play centre, play will be provided on the ward at the bedside catering to all children’s needs. An adolescent recreation area is available for children aged 12 and over. This is accessed out of play centre hours by digital keypad. (The number is only available to children who fit the criteria and can be obtained from the nursing staff).

The play centre has open access if your child is supervised.
