Environments

THAT logo
Tayside Healthcare Arts Trust (THAT) promotes the view that well designed environments can contribute positively to health and wellbeing. The selective use of the arts as an integral element within healthcare environments can enhance spaces, personalise services and counter the institutionalism often associated with healthcare buildings. The staff of THAT have been involved in this area of work for a considerable number of years and the organisation's relationship with NHS Tayside’s Capital Projects Department and other healthcare agencies has been ongoing since 2004.

THAT provides advice for NHS Tayside on Capital Projects and new healthcare facilities and has a history of working to enhance the interiors and exteriors of healthcare environments. Previous successful artist commissions are listed below:

Sheltered Housing, Perth

THAT, in partnership with Perth & Kinross Council has commissioned creative arts and design solutions within two Sheltered Housing units in Perth; Carpenter Court and Strathmore Street. Developed using a Dementia friendly design solution, these enhancements to the environments will help make navigation around the buildings easier for the tenants.

THAT commissioned Designer Louise Kirby held consultation workshops with staff and tenants to look at themes and colours that residents responded well too. Louise then devised two different applications, each appropriate to its site, which responded to the preferred theme “outside – inside”. The concept was then to use imagery that was based around the changing seasons and nature and reflected the established colour coding system for each floor of the two sites. A repeat design was introduced over three floors using the same images but with a different colour pathway.
