- The Urology department in NHS Tayside is a multi-disciplinary team comprising clinicians, specialist nurses and administrative staff.
- Specialist Urology services are provided at two sites:
- Ninewells Hospital - major cancer and complex benign service and unscheduled care.
- Perth Royal Infirmary - we carry out planned diagnostic, core urology and endourology services are provided.
- We provide minimally invasive urology surgery with conventional laparoscopy and also by using state of the art latest robot-assisted laparoscopic surgery for our prostate cancer patients with plan to further increase the use of robotic technique for kidney, bladder and reconstruction procedures.

- Renal colic
- Retention of urine
- Uncontrolled or complicated visible haematuria
- Obstructing renal stones
- Severe UTI with obstructive uropathy
- Acute penoscrotal pathologies (torsion, paraphimosis)
- Failed catheterisations
- Acute ureteric colic & AKI with obstruction,
- Ureteric stones
Urgent Outpatient:
- Recurrent UTI, asymptomatic hydronephrosis,
- Severe LUTS,
- Patients with a high residual volume (more than 400ml)
- Non-visible haematuria as per criteria in pathway,
- Urgent renal stone (size greater than 2cm),
- Chronic retention,
- Recurrent paraphimosis,
- Penoscrotal problems with voiding difficulties
Urgent Suspected Cancer:
- New onset, visible haematuria as per criteria in pathway ,
- Suspected prostate cancer (on DRE), high PSA
- Renal mass,
- Suspected bladder cancer,
- Suspected testicular cancer,
- Suspected penile cancer,
- Non-visible haematuria as per pathway (age greater than 60).
Routine Outpatient:
We see any other urological issues not specified in above categories:
- Erectile dysfunction,
- Peno-scrotal problems,
- LUTS (voiding & storage),
- Non-visible haematuria as per pathway (less than 30),
- Renal stones,
- Other genito-urological issues not specified.
Who not to refer
- Vasectomy (refer directly to vasectomy service).
- Vasectomy reversal
- Low testosterone
- Gender reassignment
- Patients less than 15 years old
- Male infertility.
- We do not accept private referrals.
