Palliative Medicine

Who We Are

Dundee, Perth & Kinross and Angus Specialist Palliative Care Services offer telephone advice, a single assessment visit or a period of specialist care according to need for patients with advanced progressive disease. Specialist palliative care services include inpatient care in Roxburghe/Cornhill, Day Care services, Symptom Control Clinic/medical domiciliary visits, Community Macmillan Nurse Specialists and Lymphoedema Nurses/clinic.

Please note that there are currently some changes to service provision in the context of the COVID 19 pandemic. Day Care services are operating on a virtual basis only and Near Me video consultation may be offered to outpatients where this is considered to be an appropriate alternative to a face to face review.

The Hospital Palliative Care Teams in Ninewells/PRI offer an advisory service to the ward teams in relation to symptom control and discharge planning.

Who to refer

Referral can be made for patients, aged 18 years or over, if they have:
  • Uncontrolled symptoms related to disease or treatment
  • Complex physical, psychological, spiritual or family needs that cannot be met by the staff in that care setting
  • Information and advice needs relating to diagnosis, disease process, treatments and symptom management
  • Specialist rehabilitation to maximise self-care
  • Complex end of life care needs

Referral to Community Macmillan Day Care Services may be appropriate for patients who are currently stable and ambulatory, but require holistic support (psycho-social, existential, physical) mainly in a group setting. This includes goal setting, courses (such as Fatigue and Breathlessness), benefits etc. Individual support can also be given via virtual/telephone option if group support is not appropriate/preferred. In addition, day services deliver non-acute interventions such as iron/bisphosphonate infusions.

How to refer

All new referrals are triaged each morning (Monday to Friday, excluding Bank Holidays) and allocated to the most appropriate part of the Specialist Palliative Care Service depending on the referral information given.
