Termination of Pregnancy

How to refer

  • All patients can now self-refer directly into the abortion (termination of pregnancy) service by phoning 01382 496762.
  • This telephone will be answered Monday to Friday 08:00 – 17:00 hours, with an answer phone message out of hours advising what to do.
  • If there are any particular concerns about a patient seeking a termination due to vulnerable adult/child protection issues, GPs can flag these concerns via an additional SCI-Gateway gynaecology referral.
  • At this time, the Chief Medical Officer in Scotland has temporarily changed the way we are able to help women who want to have an abortion. This is for women who are up to 11weeks + 6 days pregnant (in Tayside).
  • Covid-19 isolation requirements, if you are over 16 years of age, you will now be able to have both parts of the medication at home. When you call to speak to a staff member about this, they will explain how we can get the medication to you.

What will happen at the initial telephone appointment?

  • When the patient contacts the service, they will be booked in for a telephone consultation with a nurse or doctor. This consultation will last approximately 30 minutes. It includes an assessment, what the treatment and procedure involves & discussion about contraception.
  • They will also be given the opportunity to have an appointment for counselling if they are unsure about whether or not to have an abortion.
  • There are two types of abortion: medical and surgical. During COVID-19, most women will be offered a medical abortion, to avoid an operation in hospital.
