Foot and Ankle Service

Who to refer 

  • Foot & Ankle MSK conditions which fail to respond to initial Primary Care management as detailed in condition specific guidance (links at bottom of this page).
  • The referral will be vetted by any member of the multidisciplinary team, and assigned to the most appropriate member of the team.
  • Please be aware that the first point of contact is likely to be an Orthotist, Podiatrist, Physiotherapist or Surgical Podiatrist.

Who not to refer

  • Diabetic foot problems requiring specialist treatment e.g. foot wounds and Charcot feet should be referred urgently to Podiatry for assessment by an Advanced Practice Podiatrist. The AP Podiatrist works closely with the Endocrinologists and will arrange for a review at the MDT Diabetic Foot Clinic at Ninewells as required
  • Initial management should first be completed as per condition specific guidance (links at bottom of this page)
  • Acute gout (see rheumatology guidance)
  • Nail surgery requests - refer directly to Podiatry
  • Corn/callous or wound/ulcer management - refer directly to Podiatry
  • Skin lesions
     

How to refer

Emergency referral or urgent advice via on-call team through Ninewells switchboard 01382 660111. Please be aware the person holding the bleep may be in clinic, treating a patient or in theatre.

Outpatient referrals via SCI Gateway/Orthopaedics/Foot and Ankle, flagged as urgent suspected cancer, urgent, routine or advice only.
