Long Covid

  • For those with new daily persistent headache post COVID (i.e. daily headache with no pain free days since the day of onset) please undertake fundoscopy and discuss with on call Neurology Registrar to consider exclusion of cerebrovenous sinus thrombosis (CVST).
  • For those with episodic or daily headaches (that were episodic at onset) and are unresponsive to 3 trialled prophylactic agents for migraine, please refer routinely via SciGateway for consideration of secondary care treatments.
  • Platelets may be low in CVST associated with vaccine but are likely to be normal with covid related CVST. CVST is a rare complication of both.

Who to Refer

  • Neuro-cognitive symptoms can be experienced post-COVID; the most common of these is cognitive difficulties, which would be managed as per non-COVID related causes (please see: cognitive symptoms RefGuide).
  • Insomnia may also be present, impacting on cognitive function and again should be managed as per non-COVID causes (please see sleep RefGuide).
  • Headache can also occur. This usually follows the phenotype of tension type or migraine and would be managed as per RefGuide headache.
