First Seizure

Who to Refer 

  • Suspected 1st Seizure 
  • Please include in referral
    • Description of event, including prodrome and post-event symptoms.
    • Details of drug and alcohol intake to allow triage to appropriate clinic
    • Confirmation that an ECG and basic bloods (FBC, U+Es, iLFTs, calcium, and glucose) have been undertaken
  • Please ask the patient
    • To stop driving, they do not need to inform the DVLA until seen.
    • Document this advice in the letter.
    • To have a witness available for their appointment, if possible, and request them to video any further events.

Who Not to Refer

  • Patients with features of vasovagal syncope, even if associated with brief jerking of the limbs
  • Collapse - ?cause. Unless the patient has had prolonged (>5 minutes) loss of time +/- sustained movements of limbs +/- post-ictal confusion (unable to recognise family / friends)
  • Patients with an abnormal ECG suggesting a cardiac cause of collapse.
