Assistance With Travel Expenses

If you receive the following benefits, then you are automatically entitled to travelling expenses to and from hospital for clinic appointments and inpatient stays:-

  • Income Support
  • Income Related Employment & Support Allowance
  • Income based Job Seekers Allowance
  • Guaranteed Pension Credit
  • NHS Tax Exemption Certificate
  • HC2 or HC3 Certificate
  • War Pension
  • Universal Credit

Proof of the benefit (ie letter or card) must be shown to the Hospital Cashier, along with the Patients Travel Claim Form (CO7) available (on request) from the Ward or Outpatient area. The proof of benefit must be current and not older than 1 Year from the date on the letter.

Please remember to keep any travel tickets. You will need to produce these at the hospital before staff can make payment. Any payment will be based on the cost of travel by the cheapest form of transport. If travelling by private car, the rate per mile will be agreed by NHS Tayside, which is currently 15p per mile. Please note, re-imbursement will not be paid for travelling by Taxi.

Please note, any claims after 3 months, will not be honoured.

If you are on a low income and not in receipt of the above benefits, you may be able to apply though the NHS Low Income Scheme, through an HC1 application form, which is available from the Hospital Cashier. The application form contains a pre-paid envelope to be sent to the NHS Business Authority in Newcastle Upon Tyne, where they will assess the application, and return it for payment, where appropriate to the Hospital Cashier’s Office. Payment would then be made by post.

If you live in Highlands and Islands you may qualify for assistance under the "Highlands and Islands Scheme", whereby £10 will be deducted from expenses if not on any of the above qualifying benefits.

Please note the following benefits are NOT eligible for reimbursement:-

  • Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
  • Attendance Allowance
  • Carers Allowance
  • Savings Pension Credit
  • Contribution based Job Seekers Allowance
  • Scottish Adult Disability Payment
  • Scottish Child Disability Payment
