Who are Healios?

Healios are an online service who carry out mental health assessments and provide mental health interventions on behalf of NHS Tayside CAMHS.  CAMHS in Tayside have been working with Healios since 2019 and work in close partnership with us to ensure that children, young people and families can access online assessments, in the comfort of their own home, via a secure video link.

Healios provide initial treatment assessments, and two intervention programmes called Goal Based Interventions and also Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.  Children/young people will access an initial treatment assessment with Healios and then be offered either Goal Based Interventions, CBT or an appropriate service locally. The child/young person will receive a detailed initial treatment assessment report from Healios, which will identify what the next steps in their care are and this is also shared with Tayside CAMHS and their GP.

Goal Based Interventions help to promote emotional wellbeing, help develop resilience and the ability to cope with life. GBI can deliver extended assessment, and things such as psycho education, coping skills, emotional understanding and awareness and emotional regulation. Our registered mental health professionals will involve parents /carers if appropriate and after discussion with the child/young person, and for younger children this work can be parent led. Each appointment is based around what the child/young person feels they want to achieve and they will set goals with their Healios clinician and review these at every session.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) focuses on challenging and changing cognitive distortions and behaviours, improving emotional regulation and developing personal coping strategies to solve current problems

Why might a child or young person referred to NHS Tayside CAMHS be offered an appointment with Healios?

We have commissioned Healios to run an online assessment and treatment pathway within our CAMH Service, which runs alongside our current service provision and will help us to reduce waiting times and ensure that children, young people and their families can access a digital service if they so wish.

We are selecting children and young people with relatively routine assessment needs and offering the option of an online assessment with Healios. We have had feedback that children, young people and families rated their experience with Healios very highly, and the outcomes were as we would have expected if seen in CAMHS. If families choose not to go with Healios they will still be seen in CAMHS. If families need to return for follow up (e.g. medication) they will be seen by CAMHS.
