Neuro Developmental Concern

You’ve been directed to this page because the concerns you have appear to relate to the possibility of your child having a neurodevelopmental difficulty.

As in other areas across Scotland and the UK, there has been a sharp increase in referrals for neurodevelopmental (ND) assessment and this has led to an extensive waiting list. As a result we have had to carefully consider how we safely prioritise patients to ensure we carry out the primary role of CAMHS, which is to assess and treat children and young people with significant and impairing mental health concerns.  If your child does not have a co-existing mental health problem, we are unable to accept a referral for neurodevelopmental assessment.

We appreciate this may cause you worry or upset, however we would recommend focusing on your child’s individual profile, their  strengths and challenges and gaining an understanding of their individual needs. This can most helpfully be done by the adults who know the child well and the resources we'll highlight will support you with this process.

We want to assure you that you are not alone. We are here to help you navigate the next steps and connect with the right resources, including those delivered by our own CAMHS staff.

What else can I do to support my child?

Every child learns and grows in their own way and at their own pace, and we know that parents having access to good information that can support your child can make all the difference.  On our resources page (click on the link below), you will find a range of resources developed and delivered by our own staff here at CAMHS. All of our resources and online sessions address common neurodevelopmental concerns and are full of  information and strategies designed to help you navigate challenges and celebrate your child's strengths.

As parents or carers, being aware of times in your child’s life and situations that might cause added pressure or challenge, and letting them know that you are listening and there to support them, using some of the strategies from our resources section, could be all the help they need.

If you think this isn’t enough and that your child’s difficulties are starting to get in the way of their life, help is available for both of you. Try talking to your child’s teacher.  They can help you to access other support.

Support for you as a Parent/Carer?

Parents and Carers can feel overwhelmed by the impact parenting a child who is experiencing challenges can have on their lives and relationships. It can be difficult for parents and carers to speak to those closest to them about these challenges. If you think it would be helpful to speak to someone confidentially, please get in touch with the NHS Community Listening Service by phone on 01382 423 116, text 0796 777 1941 or email tay.listening@nhs.scot to book an appointment. Please note that this is not a clinical service, and it is for you as a parent rather than your child.
