Stoma Care

We provide care, support and education to meet the needs of those requiring stoma formation i.e. colostomy, ileostomy and urostomy. Patients are seen prior to stoma surgery, whilst in hospital and following discharge. We also provide a service to established patients with a stoma who can self refer to the Service for review.

Due to the COVID pandemic we have had to change our Practice and may have limited availability for face to face consultations at our Clinics.  Should you have any stoma related issues we would ask in the first instance that you contact the Colorectal Nursing Team; we will advise if a face to face appointment is required.  In some instances we may ask if it is possible to email us a photograph of your stoma; this may allow us to offer advice over the telephone thereby reducing the need for you to attend the Hospital.

Our Service:
  • Nurse Led Follow up clinics (limited during COVID)
  • Meet with patients and their families to provide information prior to surgery (this would be at your consultation with your Surgeon)
  • Provide support and education with all aspects of stoma care
  • Provide written information and advice regarding diet, exercise, clothing, returning to work, travel, psychological and sexual support
  • Liaise and support patient’s families and their carers
  • Advice and education regarding colostomy irrigation
  • Psychological support and appropriate onward referral to other support agencies
  • Offer education and advice to other professionals regarding stoma care management

Patients can telephone and speak with a Colorectal Nurse Specialist Monday to Friday during office hours where we are available to discuss issues or concerns or offer advice over the phone. We have an answer machine where messages are picked up regularly throughout the day where a message can be left and a member of staff will return your call.
