Distress Brief Intervention (DBI)

We support anyone aged 16 or over experiencing distress.

Our definition of distress is ‘An emotional pain for which the person sought, or was referred for, help and which does not require (further) emergency service response’. These could include social difficulties such as relationship problems, anxiety, low mood, thoughts of self-harm, thoughts of suicide, housing worries, money worries, and employment issues.

In Dundee, the service is hosted by Penumbra and is based in the City Centre.

Following an initial referral from a GP or mental health practitioner, a peer practitioner from the Distress Brief Interventions Team will contact the person within 24 hours and offer support for up to 14 days. They will work with them to address some of the difficulties they may be experiencing that have led to their distress and work together to identify ways of preventing and managing any future distress.

We are unable to support any individuals with significant suicidal ideation/mental health concerns who would benefit from immediate or specialised support provided by other local services.
