Skin to Skin Contact

skin to skin contact mum and newborn
Skin to skin contact is important for all mums and babies regardless of whether you are breast or formula feeding.
Skin contact with your baby immediately after birth will:
  • Help to calm your baby and helps to regulate his/her breathing and heart rate
  • Keep your baby warm and this also helps to maintain your baby’s blood sugar
  • Encourage high levels of the hormone oxytocin which not only helps with breastfeeding it also helps you to carry on bonding with your baby
  • Helps reduce baby’s stress hormones.

Keeping your baby in close

It’s good for both you and baby to have lots of skin to skin contact – you can’t spoil your baby by having too many cuddles! Ensuring babies feel safe and secure helps development of positive relationships which in turn helps their brain to develop in the best possible way.

Having your baby close also lets you easily see the signs that your baby is ready to feed so you can be responsive to his/her needs before he/she starts to cry.
