Support Groups and Help

Perth Birthing Unit Infant Feeding Group
It can take some time to build your confidence with breastfeeding. Support is available to help provide you with advice and reassurance.

We have volunteers within some of our hospital settings who, along the maternity staff, will be only too happy to offer some help and advice with your feeding.

Breastfeeding Support Workers are also available in some areas and they, along with community midwives, will be able to provide practical help particularly if you are having a challenge with your feeding.

There are also a number of groups across Tayside where you can go to share experiences with other mums – many mums find this to be a huge help just to sit down and chat with others who may have had similar experiences.

However you choose to feed your baby Maternity Staff will do their best to help you with any queries.

Babywearing Support

Many parents nowadays are choosing to carry their babies in wraps or slings known as babywearing. There are benefits associated with babywearing such as strengthening the bond between baby and parent and particularly in the mother increasing levels of the hormone oxytocin which help with bonding, breastfeeding etc. Babies who are carried in this way are also often soothed by the rhythm of parental heartbeat, walking and movement and tend to cry less.

Carry your baby safely by following the T.I.C.K.S. Rule.

Biological Nurturing

If you find that you are having difficulties and your baby will not attach at the breast easily or it takes a lot of time and perseverance then an alternative approach may be a position called “Biological Nurturing”. This is a technique being widely recommended across the world. Ask your Midwife or have a look at the position on the Biological Nurturing website and watching the DVD clips that may be useful.
