Colposcopy

A colposcopy is a simple procedure used to look at the cervix, the lower part of the womb at the top of the vagina.

Why do I need an examination?

In most cases this is because your recent smear was not normal and we need to have a closer look at your cervix (neck of the womb). The condition usually found is called CIN (Cervical Intraepithelial Neoplasia) which is a surface abnormality. There are various grades of CIN which currently will not be doing any harm. However, if left alone changes may happen:
It may go away itself
It may stay the same
It may gradually get worse
In some women it might develop into cancer but this would take many years to happen
We cannot predict what would happen to your cervix if we simply ignored it. Therefore it is important that we examine your cervix closely, make a diagnosis, and treat any abnormality to encourage your cervix to heal normally, and your smears to return to normal.
