Keeping Active

Why Is Being Active important?

Regular physical activity can help maintain and improve your:

  • Muscle strength.
  • Balance.
  • Mobility.
  • Coordination.
  • Confidence.
  • Ability to carry out everyday activities

After a fall, some people become less active because they are worried about falling again. However, becoming less active can lead to further loss of strength and confidence, which may increase your risk of another fall.

Try to stay as active as you safely can. Even small amounts of activity can be beneficial.

Activities such as walking, strength exercises, balance exercises, gardening, dancing and some exercise classes can all help you remain active.

If you have been given exercises by a physiotherapist or another healthcare professional, continue to do these unless you have been advised otherwise or your health has changed.

Only carry out exercises that you feel safe and confident doing.

Balance Exercises

Exercises that challenge your balance and improve leg strength can help reduce your risk of falling.

The most appropriate exercises will depend on your current mobility, balance and health.

If you have recently fallen, have significant balance problems or are unsure which exercises are safe for you, speak to a physiotherapist or healthcare professional before starting a new exercise programme.
