Stress, Mood And Wellbeing
Living with pain can be frustrating and exhausting. Stress, worry and low mood can also make pain more difficult to manage.
Taking time to look after your emotional wellbeing can be an important part of managing persistent pain.
You May Find It Helpful To:
- Speak to someone you trust.
- Continue taking part in activities you enjoy.
- Spend time with family and friends.
- Use relaxation or mindfulness techniques.
- Keep physically active.
- Set small and achievable goals.
If your mood is having a significant impact on your daily life, speak to your GP or another appropriate healthcare professional.
Relaxation And Breathing
When you are in pain, your body can sometimes become tense and you may find yourself holding your muscles tightly.
Slow breathing and relaxation can help reduce tension and give you a greater sense of control over your symptoms.
You could try:
- Find a comfortable position.
- Allow your shoulders and jaw to relax.
- Take a slow, comfortable breath in.
- Slowly breathe out.
- Continue for a few minutes at a pace that feels comfortable.
You do not need to force deep breaths. The aim is to slow down and allow your body to relax.
