Nerve blocks

You may have a nerve block to numb a part of your body as part of your anaesthetic care, either instead of or alongside a general anaesthetic. Your anaesthetist will discuss if this is an option for your surgery.

If you have had a nerve block, this can last for up to 48 hours. You will not have full sensation in this part of your body, so please take extra care when moving around. You may not be able to feel pain or heat and may inadvertently injure this part of your body. Please take extra care, and do not use hot appliances such as kettles or irons.

Do not drive until the nerve block has worn off completely, and you are safely able to fully operate your vehicle.

We advise you take pain relief as soon as your sensation returns. If you are still numb before you go to bed, take pain relief before going to sleep as the block may wear off overnight.

Please contact us on the numbers below if your nerve block has not worn off 48 hours after your operation.
